Support worker

Kids Out West is currently recruiting casual support workers who will assist in supporting children who are in out of home care by supervising contact between children and their families, providing day or overnight respite support as well as transport.

Selection Criteria

· Minimum Cert III in Community Service, or similar qualification and experience in service delivery with children with a trauma history.

· Reliable car with comprehensive insurance

· Written and oral communication skills of a high order.

· Good computer skills

· Current drivers licence.

· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

· Current first aid certificate or a willingness to obtain one.

· Current Working with Children’s check or a willingness to obtain one.

· Availability of at least 3 days per week, including overnight shifts and travel.

PLEASE NOTE: In addition to the Working with Children's Check, the following checks will be undertaken for all Support Workers

- National Criminal History Check

- RTA Driving History Check

- Three (3) professional reference checks.

Kids Out West is currently recruiting experienced casual carer assessors in the Central West New South Wales and Murrumbidgee districts. All assessors require a Bachelors Degree in Social Work or similar, plus experience in the Child Protection/Out of home Care sector, excellent communication skills and highly organised.

15. Example Scenario #1:
You are supervising a contact between a Birth Mother and her two young children aged 6 and 3. The mother arrives 10 minutes late and as she approaches, you notice that she is having trouble with walking straight.
As the Mother greets the children, you can smell alcohol on her and notice she is slurring her words. As she attempts to sit down on the park bench, she is visibly off balance and struggling to keep her head up.
The mother claims she “had a big night last night and will be fine in a moment”.
How do you proceed?* a) Continue with the contact encouraging the Mother to drink plenty of water and report the Mother's appearance to the carer upon drop off. Document this in your contact report. b) Advise the Mother that if she is unable to pull herself together within the first half hour you will need to cease the contact. Report this to the carer upon drop off and advise your manager if contact is ended early. c) Contact your Manager to report your observations cease contact immediately and advise the carer that the children will be dropped off early. Report the incident in your contact report.

16. Example Scenario #2:
You are rostered for an overnight supervision of a 10-year-old girl in a motel setting. Throughout the course of the evening, the young girl discloses that she had been abused by a male family member and this is why she is in care.
What would be the correct procedure?* a) You are not required to do anything further with this information as Family and Community Services assuming they already know this information hence the reason she has been assumed into care. b) You allow the child the opportunity to make her disclosure without questioning or ridiculing her. You contact your Manager and advise them of the child’s disclosure and then make a Child Protection Helpline report. c) Allow the child to make her disclosure asking open ended questions to extract further details to provide this to the Child Protection Helpline and the Police.
